Fourth Grade
& Upper Grades' Math

Mrs. Deb McCarthy
Teaching in St. Francis since 1976

I have always felt that every child deserves to be in a classroom where he or she feels safe, comfortable, and loved. They need to know that they are "special".

What can be more special than celebrating the day of their births! On our birthdays, we try to make the day extra special. Of course, we sing a rousing verse of Happy Birthday followed by a huge round of applause. Everyone gets a birthday pencil and a chance to pick a present out of the "birthday box". The students also get to choose a new book from my collection. This book is dedicated to the class in their honor. After the book is read, it is returned to the bookcase. Over the years, when someone chooses to read this book, they get to see to whom the book was dedicated. It's exciting to see children discover books dedicated in honor of their brothers, sisters or older friends. They also like the idea that when they are in high school and college, they will still be remembered with fondness at St. Francis de Sales School.

I also have the privilage of teaching Math 5 & Math 6. This gives me a chance to remain in the lives of the children after they leave the 4th grade. This makes me feel very lucky.

In all classes and grades my goal is to impart as much knowledge as possible, and also make each and every student know that they are important and special.
